Northern Ball 2017 :: Charity

Reuben’s Retreat was founded in 2012 by Nicola Graham in memory of her son, Reuben, as a charity to support other families walking a similar path. Here, Nicola explains the huge progress so far and what still needs to be achieved...

"Reuben’s Retreat will be a home-from-home for seriously poorly children and their parents/siblings, and for families bereaved of a child. As a small charity with just four full-time staff, we are built on an army of love and compassionate hearts.

Our impact in just four years has been huge and we’re so proud to have supported over 200 families, including 350-plus unique beneficiaries to date.

2015 was a pivotal year as we completed Phases 1 and 2 of a multi million-pound, five-year, 10-phase project, including our counselling and bereavement support centre "The Lodge at Reuben’s", which is now open. A full renovation of the main building’s roof has just finished and by 2020, subject to support and fundraising, we hope the entire Retreat will be fit for purpose.

Once fully open we’ll have a day-care activity zone boasting a hydrotherapy pool, sensory play, movie room, arts, crafts and messy play. A Victorian tearoom and four large self-contained family apartments will achieve the vision and provide a genuine sanctuary for families.

Your support is welcomed, appreciated and very much needed, thank you!"
